IF – Heaven is the first piece in a set of pieces titled If and When: Heaven. If and When is a musical organization of ideas that explores a particular scenario in two separate ways. The first method, “IF,” is the postulation of the scenario in the hypothetical, giving regard to all of its outcomes and possibilities. The second, “WHEN,” is the corporeal manifestation of the same scenario. Each piece exists separately and may be performed individually, but they each share each other’s material, and function well as a set.

The scenario of this piece is the concept of heaven, not necessarily of the axiomatic Christian kind, but in a general sense of afterlife. The piece makes no claims of asserting a view on the matter, and is purely a fictionalized exploration.
